Scottsbluff is an outcrop on a fairly flat landscape. It is interesting not only for its geological features, but its position on the Oregon Trail. Travelling west from places like Iowa, across fairly featureless land, this would have been the point where all that changes - being known as the Gateway to the Rockies. We actually walked along ruts made from the trail of oxen, humans and carts - still surviving nearly 2 centuries later!

It was a nice little drive up to the top of Scottsbluff, through some tunnels and we mooched round the visitor centre. We both remarked that the exhibition there summarised all the things we have found interesting on this trip; the story of the early explorers preceding pioneers and the westward expansion, and the impact all this had on the Native Americans, the discovery and reporting (via paintings) of Yellowstone, the wildlife and the formation of the features of the landscape over millennia. We have certainly learnt and experienced a lot!

200 miles then to drive back to Denver and drop the car off marking the end of this part of the adventure. Onward to Nashville tomorrow!
